Optimal stopping

In mathematics, the theory of optimal stopping or early stopping is concerned with the problem of choosing a time to take a particular action, in order to maximise an expected reward or minimise an expected cost. Optimal stopping problems can be found in areas of statistics, economics, and mathematical finance (related to the pricing of American options). A key example of an optimal stopping problem is the secretary problem. Optimal stopping problems can often be written in the form of a Bellman equation, and are therefore often solved using dynamic programming.

1. But concerns about the "non–optimal" process appear widespread.
2. He added: "The fact that an awful lot of work had gone into the debate about the OFR and a sensible compromise [on the level of regulation] had been hammered out and it‘s not now going to happen; that‘s plainly not an optimal process as a number of the accounting and City bodies have pointed out." Business groups welcomed the deregulatory intent signalled by the OFR‘s abolition.
3. Sir David Arculus, the government–appointed head of the Better Regulation Task Force, described the decision to scrap the rules, after extensive consultation and work developing them, as "plainly not an optimal process". In an interview with the Financial Times, Sir David also raised doubts about the Mr Brown‘s focus on the "gold–plating" of European regulations when they are put into practice in the UK, suggesting the red tape review announced by the chancellor last week should be channelled in a more constructive direction.
